The text examines the trends, uses, motivations behind sending remittances, cost of sending them and how they are affected by the nature and the development level of different institutional factors.

The remittance flows are growing over time and they are used mostly for reducing the uncertainty of life in the less developed parts of the world. However, motivation for sending remittances could be improved and thus remittances could be more conducive to economic development if 1) the relation between the remittance decision and the migration decision is better understood and 2) the costs of international money transfers are reduced. More studies about those issues would benefit the international community. Efforts should be made in all fronts to encourage such international flow of funds not only to have a redistribution of income all over the world, but also to synchronize the efforts towards global economic development and a better integration of the world economy. About the Author
Susan T. Fiske is Eugene Higgins Professor, Psychology and Public Affairs, Princeton University (Ph.D., Harvard University; honorary doctorates, Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium; Universiteit Leiden, Netherlands; Universität Basel, Switzerland). She investigates social cognition, especially cognitive stereotypes and emotional prejudices, at cultural, interpersonal, and neuro-scientific levels. Author of over 300 publications and winner of numerous scientific awards, she has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences.  

Sponsored by a Guggenheim, her 2011 Russell-Sage-Foundation book is Envy Up, Scorn Down: How Status Divides Us. Her most recent book is The HUMAN Brand: How We Respond to People, Products, and Companies (with Chris Malone, 2013). With Shelley Taylor, she has written four editions of a classic text: Social Cognition (2013, 4/e) and on her own, three editions of Social Beings: Core Motives in Social Psychology (2013, 3/e). She has lately edited Beyond Common Sense: Psychological Science in the Courtroom (2008), the Handbook of Social Psychology (2010, 5/e), Social Neuroscience (2011), the Sage Handbook of Social Cognition (2012), and Facing Social Class: How Societal Rank Influences Interaction (2012). Currently an editor of Annual Review of Psychology, PNAS, and Policy Insights from Behavioral and Brain Sciences, she is also President of the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Her graduate students arranged for her to win the University’s Mentoring Award, and international advisees arranged for her to win the APS Mentoring Award. 

Shelley E. Taylor, Ph.D. is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research examines the psychological and social origins and moderators of psychological and biological responses to stress and their health consequences. She focuses especially on socioemotional resources, including optimism, mastery, self-esteem, and social support, and the genetic, early environmental, and neural bases of these resources. Professor Taylor also studies how positive illusions can be protective of mental and physical health. Professor Taylor received her Ph.D. from Yale University. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her work is published in a broad array of psychological and biologically-oriented journals.

Like many of my boomer generation, I've enjoyed HST's writing since I first read his two-issue of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" when first published under the identity of Raul Duke in Rolling Stone. I LOL'd every few pages and have read several of his works in various publications as well as biographies over the years.I also patiently read and discussed his writing with people who seemed to feel threatened by his Gonzo style of journalism or his style of writing. To those critics, I'll say, "f'-em." HST was fun to read, and what is wrong with that?I followed his career and appreciated his political skewering politics from an incredibly cynical point of view. He was the leftist who shook his fist and bellowed against an establishment completely dedicated to power. I found it both hilarious and honest from his point of view. All establishment political figures took a turn in HST's barrel.This book attempts to portray him as a serious political critic. I learned things about him I have never found anywhere else. It is limited in coverage to those issues, but worth reading for those interested in HST or that period of political history.I miss him but we have his written works which will endure.

I'm a long-time fan of HST so I of course loved this as it's well-written and offers new POVs on some legendary moments, as well as ones I didn't know. Beyond that though, the historical/political aspect made for a great read even if you have never heard of HST. In fact, I was with my parents at the time of reading this, and they both borrowed it and immediately read it cover to cover. They had never heard of Fear and Loathing but they remember the moments he experienced and wrote about so they were still able to connect. That ability to hook reader's regardless of their Thompson knowledge is a tribute to the author.

The in-depth analysis of politics in the 70's is particularly relevant in today's political environment. The coverage of and details about Nixon should be required reading for those who didn't live through it. I particularly enjoyed seeing do much detail about the younger version of Hunter Thompson, his wife, his life, and his friends. It was a surprisingly easy read written in a style I found most refreshing. I picked up and literally couldn't put it down until I finished. Best read this year.

Mini book review: Just finished Timothy Denevi’s “Freak Kingdom,” subtitled “Hunter S. Thompson’s Ten-Year Crusade Against American Fascism.” I’ve been reading and re-reading a lot of books that the rise of Trumpist neo-Nazism has brought to mind – the classic “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany,” by William Shirer was the first book I revisited – and this new book came to my attention because the two journalists I most wish could be around to comment on Trump and his minions are Hunter Thompson and Molly Ivans, both dead. “Freak Kingdom” is not a cradle to grave biography of Thompson but focuses on his most productive period, which includes his writings about the POTUS that was easily the most evil in history until Trump came along: Richard Milhous Nixon. “[w]e will not see another like him for quite a while. He was dishonest to a fault, the truth was not in him, and if it can be said that he resembled any other animal in this world, it could only have been the hyena.” What would he have said about Trump. I have a particular affection for Thompson because I met him when I was working for his friend United States Senator Gary Hart (D. Colo.) (there are many stories there) and because in my first career as a journalist I tried and failed to be as Gonzo as Thompson. You should read this book just to consider the Nixon-Trump nexus. For a pop cultural tome it is meticulously researched with more than 100 pages of fine print end notes. It would be a great addition to your library if you are doing scholarly research on the era or if you just want to revisit a time that now seems long gone.

From the first edition in 1972, ARTFORMS has been as visually exciting as the individual works of art that are reproduced in it. ARTFORMS grew out of a desire to introduce art through an engaging visual experience. It is written and designed to help readers build an informed foundation for individual understanding and enjoyment of art. By introducing art theory, practice, and history in a single volume, this book aims to draw students into a new or expanded awareness of the visual arts. The goal is to engage readers in the process of realizing their own innate creativity.

In keeping with this philosophy, the revised seventh edition of ARTFORMS is a careful blending of the strengths of its earlier editions—clear organizational structure, straightforward writing, and high quality images—and a number of important changes. Thirty new illustrations of contemporary art works have been added, including those of many new artists in a wide range of media, from graphic design and architecture to installation and ceramics. Contemporary artists represented in this book for the first time include Willie Cole, Rachel Whiteread, Mel Chin, Zaha Hadid, Sarah Charlesworth, Xu Bing, Tunga, Charles Ray, William Kentridge, Tibor Kalman, and others. Moreover, I have continued the effort begun in the last edition to reflect the ever-broadening canon of art history by making this edition the most inclusive yet. Part One: Art Is . . . (Chapters 1 and 2) introduces the nature of art, aesthetics, and creativity, and discusses the purposes of art and visual communication. Strongly believing that we are all artists at heart, we include an essay on children and their "Early Encounters with the Artist Within," and a section on the works of untrained artists.

Part Two: The Language of Visual Experience (Chapters 3-6) presents the language of vision: visual elements, principles of design, and style. Experience with the language of visual form introduced in Chapters 3 through 5 provides a foundation for developing critical thinking and for considering evaluation and art criticism, discussed in Chapter 6.

The visual and verbal vocabulary covered in Part Two prepares the reader to sample the broad range of art disciplines, media, and processes presented in Part Three: Two-Dimensional Arts (Chapters 7-11) and Part Four: Three-Dimensional Arts (Chapters 12-14). In these two parts we discuss the classical media used in drawing, painting, sculpture, and architecture and the latest developments in photography, video, film, computer imaging, craft, and environmental art.
